'From the images of exhaustion and bewilderment in the song 'Lonesome Tears', I was reminded of the story of Niobe, who wept until she was turned to stone, and of the pool of tears cried by Alice in Wonderland. In each of these stories, the character's grief forms part of the physical landscape, which became my point of departure for this project.

This painting shows a coastal topography changed by a lake of lonesome tears, which has flooded the landscape that was the site of the lost relationship. The lyrics written on the coastline, 'How could this love, every turning, never turn its eye on me?', are likewise being overrun by water, just as the singer in the original song is overwhelmed by the experience of loss and grief.'

'The first time I heard this song, I was riding the NYC subway at night. The people around me looked lonely and tired and the song fit perfectly for my trip. I looked at the faces and wondered if any hearts had been broken that night. Dark imagery and moving light captures the spirit of this song for me.'
